How Often to Drain Your Swimming Pool

Algae, dirty water, and even dead animals in the pool are every pool owner’s nightmare. If that’s the case with the pool, then maybe it’s time to drain it. Although it might seem contradictory, draining the pool isn’t something that should be a frequent practice. Knowing when to empty the swimming pool enables homeowners to prolong its lifespan and avoid wasting resources, such as money for chemicals, water, and time.

How often to drain the pool and under what conditions

Although pools require maintenance, draining them every year or even every month isn’t necessary. Most pool professionals suggest draining in-ground pools every five to seven years. Depending on a pool’s condition, this may vary. If homeowners maintain the pool properly and keep chlorine and pH levels at the appropriate levels, there’s no need to do it more often.

That said, there are a couple of reasons why you might have to drain the pool more regularly:

  • Repainting

  • Repair work

  • TDS (total dissolved solids)

If the pool requires repairing or repainting, pool experts will be needed to drain it. Furthermore, there can be an issue with total dissolved solids. Eventually, these can affect water chemistry. Although pool owners often add chemicals, such as soda ash, to raise PH levels, they will have to work harder to maintain adequate chemistry levels. With more chemicals needed to keep the water clean, there’s the cost and risk of skin rash and allergies. Eventually, even they won’t help, so draining will be the only option.

A pool filled with algae is a pretty disgusting sight. But don’t immediately think that draining it is the only thing that helps. With a little bit of shocking the water and filtration system, the pool will look clean in days.

The best time to drain the swimming pool

Knowing the best time to drain the swimming pool is essential to prolong its lifespan. Too cold or too hot weather can seriously affect an empty pool and cause cracks in the liner.

Most homeowners decide to do it in the spring so that the pool is ready for summer activities. It’s also OK to do so in early autumn when temperatures are still mild. However, pool professionals don’t suggest waiting until late autumn as the pool will most likely be empty during the winter, causing damage to the structure.

Draining fiberglass pools

Pool experts advise against draining fiberglass pools. The reason is that the water inside the pool keeps the panels in check. Once there’s no water, the panels might bulge, potentially causing more damage. If it’s necessary to drain the pool, consult the professionals first. They’ll suggest what’s best for the situation.

Maintain the pool

Regular maintenance of the pool will keep it in pristine condition. Draining it every five years or so will keep TDS levels in check. However, you should always consult the experts who have the correct equipment to do the job correctly.
